Claire was born in Kumasi, Ghana and raised in the United States, except for two years during which she lived in Ethiopia. She spent most of her adult life in Mauritius, an island off the coast of Madagascar, having moved there in 1988 to with her husband, Veenaye. In 2003, she returned to the US. She is the mother of two children, Sarah and Shane.
