Claire was born in Ghana and raised in the United States, except for a couple years during which she lived in Ethiopia. She spent most of her adult life in Mauritius, a multi-cultural island-nation off the coast of Madagascar, having moved there in 1988 to live with her husband, Veenaye. In 2003, she returned to the US and now lives in Massachusetts. She is the mother of two children, Sarah and Shane.
